CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Avoiding mistakes on pit road has been a key to victory in NASCAR Sprint Cup competition this season.

The same can be said of the fifth NASCAR Sprint Pit Crew Challenge, which the No. 31 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet team of driver Jeff Burton won in record fashion Thursday night at Time Warner Cable Arena.

Burton’s over-the-wall crew of gas man Curt Bowman, catch-can man Andrew Childers, front-tire changer Daniel Blizzard, front-tire carrier Jon Wallace, rear-tire changer Terry Spalding, rear-tire carrier Chris Martin and jackman Adam North completed their respective skills and the 40-yard car push in 22.115 seconds, an event record, to defeat the No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports Dodge team of driver Reed Sorenson in the finals. TALK ABOUT YOUR NEW TEAM, NEW SPONSORS, AND NEW CAR HEADING INTO THE DAYTONA 500 THIS COMING SUNDAY

“Things feel good so far. I think the biggest test for us as a team was the Bud Shootout. It was great to be involved in that and just kind of get a head start on communication and what we need to work on for the 500. I think everybody is really seeing that obviously you’d love to have speed, but the big thing is having a car that handles. It used to be in 20 laps you could run wide open before you had to start to lift and start worrying about handling. And it used to be about 12 laps before you had to lift, and now it’s about three laps. So, handling is just a premium right now and I think we saw that in the Shootout. It’s something that we really focused on over at RCR and based on how we were able to run at the end of that race in the Shootout, I was very happy with the way the car handled and worked.”

Harvick cruised across the finish line after a split-second crash behind him and runner-up Jamie McMurray wiped out a group of contenders, including defending Sprint Cup Champion Jimmie Johnson, contenders Kyle Busch and Brian Vickers, as well as Casey Mears and pole-sitter Paul Menard.

Bowyer Is Standings Leader, Defending Winner Coming To Richmond

It seems like Clint Bowyer (No. 2 BB&T Chevrolet) is getting all breaks this season.
Despite a 25th-place finish due to an early accident at Talladega Superspeedway — where he went in leading defending series champion Carl Edwards (No. 60 Scotts Ford) by nine points — Bowyer managed to increase that lead to 27 points thanks to Edwards’ first DNF of the season.
