Matt Kenseth, driver of the No. 17 DeWalt Ford Fusion, held his weekly Q&A session in the Phoenix International Raceway infield media center to discuss this weekend’s race. Kenseth is ninth in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series point standings.

MATT KENSETH – No. 17 DeWalt Ford Fusion – HOW DO YOU LIKE RACING HERE? “I like coming here to Phoenix. This is probably, at least for me anyway, is probably the most fun flat track that we have. It’s real unique with a really long sweeping corner in three and four – kind of like Milwaukee – and then kind of a tight one and two and the dogleg in the backstretch is unusual. I think it’s the only track we have like that, so it’s a fun track, it’s challenging. I think you can pass on it a lot better than most flat tracks, especially down in one and two it seems like there’s always a lot of action and a lot of passing, so it’s one that I always look forward to.” [read more...]

AVONDALE, Ariz. (November 7, 2008) — Kevin Harvick held off hard-charging Kyle Busch to win Friday night’s Lucas Oil 150 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Phoenix International Raceway, as title contenders Ron Hornaday and Johnny Benson struggled to wreck-plagued finishes that left them three points apart with one race left.

Benson takes a three-point lead to the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, the smallest margin with one race left in series history. The previous low margin was Hornaday’s 13-point advantage over Jack Sprague in 1998; when Hornaday went on to win the title.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Carl Edwards keeps chipping away at leader Jimmie Johnson’s point lead.
The deficit is now 106 points. An Edwards comeback with two races remaining would be the largest since the current points system was implemented in 1975.
But it’s not far off, which should keep Edwards optimistic. In 1992, Alan Kulwicki overcame an 85-point deficit over Bill Elliott with two races remaining to win the championship.
Edwards has beaten Johnson by 106 points in consecutive races five times this year.

Kyle Busch gave fans of the NASCAR Nationwide Series a case of déjà vu as he scored a dominant victory for the second straight week.

After picking up his first win of the season in NASCAR’s Nationwide Series last Saturday at Texas, the No. 18 Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry driver staved off a determined challenge from Carl Edwards to win Friday night’s Bashas’ Supermarkets 200 at Phoenix International Raceway.

In a green-white-checkered-flag finish that took the race two laps beyond its scheduled 200 laps, Busch crossed the finish line .241 seconds ahead of Edwards. The victory was Busch’s 13th in the series and the fourth for Toyota this season. The 22-year-old led 133 laps on the evening.

Denny Hamlin ran third, followed by Kevin Harvick and David Ragan. Mike Bliss, Stephen Leicht, points leader Clint Bowyer, David Reutimann and David Stremme completed the top 10.
