Jack Roush, car owner of five Roush Fenway Ford Fusions in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, got a first-hand look at last Saturday’s rain-drenched NASCAR Nationwide race in Montreal. With another road-course event on tap this weekend at Watkins Glen, Ford Racing asked Roush for his thoughts on racing in the rain.
In American auto racing, both in the business of racing and the science of racing, there are only a handful of names you can call on for understanding.
To my way of thinking, among the best of the best, there is Roger Penske, Doug Fehan of Corvette Racing, Dave Maraj of Audi Sport North America, Les Unger of Toyota Motorsports and Jack Roush, to name a few.
From these individuals, if you have the privilege of getting time to talk with them, you can learn everything from the upper-most advances in tech, marketing and performance to the street-level gut instincts of competitive motorsports.
And no one better represents these attributes more than Jack Roush.
Car owner Jack Roush held a Q&A session in the Martinsville Speedway infield media center to address the issue of his comments in the recent issue of ESPN The Magazine.
JACK ROUSH, Car Owner – Roush Fenway Ford Fusions – “I find myself in the eye of the storm. Unlike the last time I was here, I’m not mad today. I’m not gonna answer any question that all of you might have that would take me past the point of giving you information that I think is appropriate given the other considerations that are going on behind the scenes right now. My apologies to one or more of you that approached me as I entered the garage area this morning before I had a chance to see what in fact had happened in the news. I don’t hang on the web for any inflammatory comment than anybody might make that could aggravate me or be relevant or irrelevant to facts that are developing.
JACK ROUSH, Car Owner – Roush Fenway Ford Fusions – “The reason I’m here this morning is because I’m mad. I got woken up this morning to the news that Lee White, on behalf of Toyota, had made some disparaging remarks in the USA Today. I will comment on those at the end, but I’d like for David Poole and Mike Mulhern and anybody else who want so accept some off the record information about Lee White. Lee White worked for me in the eighties and I won’t say more than that, but I can give you some insight to Lee. Lee is a real nice guy. I respect him, but he’s also a great racer and will seek any advantage that he think he might have an opportunity for.
“I’ve got the part here that is in question and I’m gonna talk about that and a little big about our position on the appeal process that’s being considered. I’m gonna talk about what happened and how it happened and what we know about it today.
