SPRINTS GEAR UP FOR SHARON SPEEDWAY RACE AUGUST 25;RAIN FORCES HALT TO SALEM 50-LAPPER

Levi Jones of Olney, Ill. will lead the Lucas Oil USAC National Sprint Cars to Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio August 25, the next stop for USAC’s “Thunder & Lightning” series. Unfortunately Thunder and Lightning prevailed Saturday night as the 48th Cardinal Contracting “Joe James/Pat O’Connor Memorial” at the Salem (Ind.) Speedway was rained out.

Only 15 of the 50 scheduled laps had been completed at Salem before the rains fell. An abbreviated points payout was allocated to the participants, which left Jones 104 points ahead of Darren Hagen in the new standings. Jones was Saturday’s fastest Salem qualifier and won the 10-lap semi.

Heat race victories at Salem went to Dave Darland, Jesse Hockett and Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

CRA SPRINTS HEAD FOR SANTA MARIA SATURDAY;SPENCER TRIUMPHANT IN PERRIS 30-LAPPER

The Lucas Oil USAC/CRA Sprint Cars return to Santa Maria (Calif.) Speedway Saturday night and it couldn’t come at a better time for Mike Spencer of Temecula, Calif.

Spencer won at Santa Maria in June and scored his third victory of the season Saturday night at Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway. He ranks second in the current USAC/CRA standings behind leader Tony Jones.

Spencer passed Rickie Gaunt on lap 10 and led the final 21 laps at Perris in his Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply/Arizona Race Mart Maxim/Shaver to beat Gaunt, Jones, Tyler Brown and Blake Miller.

Three drivers who rank in the “top-10” in USAC/CRA points are still seeking their initial 2007 victories, namely Rickie Gaunt, Rip Williams and David Cardey. All three have second-place feature finishes this year at the PAS.

USAC National Sprints Head to Salem for Joe James/ Pat O’Connor Classic

By Bram • Aug 1st, 2007 • Category: Sprints

“JOE JAMES/PAT O’CONNOR CLASSIC” SATURDAY AT SALEM;CARDINAL CONTRACTING “JOE JAMES/PAT O’CONNOR CLASSIC”

The 48th Annual Cardinal Contracting “Joe James/Pat O’Connor Classic,” honoring the memory of two of our sport’s more accomplished drivers, is slated this Saturday at the Salem (Ind.) Speedway and could be pivotal in the chase for USAC’s 2007 Lucas Oil National Sprint Car Championship. The USAC National Midgets share the billing Saturday, with a 30-lap Midget feature followed by the 50-lap Sprint car feature. The race is the last currently on the 2007 calendar for the National Sprint Cars on pavement.

Levi Jones of Olney, Ill. leads the series standings in quest of his second USAC title. His 100-point lead over Darren Hagen will not be challenged Saturday but Hagen could take a huge bite out of it with a strong performance. Hagen, of Riverside, Calif., is seeking his first National title.

Saturday’s event began at Salem in 1953. Larry Crockett won the inaugural race and in the ensuing years the list of winners is impressive, including Indianapolis 500 winners Bob Sweikert, A.J. Foyt, Parnelli Jones, Mario Andretti and Bobby Unser. O’Connor also won the event twice prior to his death in a 1958 racing accident.

Bryan Clauson is the defending race winner, while former champions Brian Tyler, Eric Gordon and Dave Darland are expected to seek repeat wins on Saturday.

Jeff Cook Wires the Empire Super Sprint Field at Autodrome Granby

By Bram • Jul 30th, 2007 • Category: Sprints

Collects over $2,000 in Lucas Oil Canadian Invasion Series Victory.

GRANBY, QC – The month of July is the heat of the summer and Antwerp, N.Y.’s Jeff Cook is heating up on the Empire Super Sprint (ESS) circuit and the tour brought to you by Jacobs Motorsports.  Taking advantage of his outside pole starting spot, Cook and his North Country Welding Maxim took the lead at the drop of the green flag and led all 25 laps to capture the Fondations 4 Saisons A-Main at Autodrome Granby.  The victory for the Lucas Oil Canadian Invasion Series event was worth over $2,000 in cash and marked his second triumph in the last three events.  A late afternoon rain made the big half-mile tacky the entire night and Cook is not afraid to tell you that it does fit into his style.  “I just seem to do better when there is bite out there.  This car seems to like it too.  Just like Edelweiss, we had rain early in the night and the track just had so much bite in it and it lasted all night” noted Cook shortly after his second victory of 2007.  “This has been a good car for me, anytime you can drive a car hard and be comfortable is a big help.”  And, how fast was the Granby oval on this night?  With two laps to go in the A-Main, his #10 was gunned at 133 M.P.H. on the back stretch!  But, most importantly for the driver who is on the full ESS tour for the fourth season, it marked the first time he has a podium finish at a track he really likes.  “I hope the jinx is over.  I didn’t care where I finished; first, second, third, I just wanted a podium finish for once.” Cook was reflecting with a smile and then he quickly joked, “It feels good to be on this side of the fence for once!”  He was referring to one year ago during the A-Main when his sprinter went over the wall, through the fence and landed near the turn four grandstands.  The 2006 Jereco Competition Engines rookie of the year in Michael Parent started the event on the pole in front of many hometown friends and fans.  But, it was Cook on the outside that got the jump with Parent, Cory Sparks, Alain Bergeron and Jeff VanDusen in tow.  A red flag on lap two for Anthony Cain who flipped wildly in turn one was the only time the action was stopped or slowed in the 25 lap event.  Cain walked away unharmed.  With the final 23 laps under the green lights, it was up to Cook to maneuver the lapped traffic and not to make a mistake.  While Parent stayed within reach, the opening of the door never did happen. He wanted his first career ESS victory on this night badly, but, it was to be a career best and well earned runner-up finish.  It was Cook by several lengths for his sixth career ESS victory which ironically puts him just one behind former ESS star Adrian Flath, Cook is Flath’s son-in-law.  Parent’s well wishes were extended well into the night for second with VanDusen moving his #56D into third late to close the overall point standings.  Bergeron kept the French-Canadian crowd smiling with a fine fourth as Lance Yonge was home for fifth.  Rounding out the top ten were current point leader Steve Poirier who earned the Lane’s Yamaha Hard Charger bonus after starting in 12th. Sparks was seventh, Jared Zimbardi, Mike Stelter and Tommy Wickham finished up the top ten.  Taking the Car Mate Custom Built Trailer heats were Yonge, Wickham and Bergeron.  ESS/GRANBY NOTES: Making first starts in 2007 were DIRTCar sportsman star Alex Boisvert as a teammate to Parent, Boisvert was to make his debut at Cornwall two weeks ago but was rained out.  Also, after three year hiatus, Tim Zimbardi took the wheel alongside his son Jared…A scary incident in the heats saw a broken suspension piece on the sprinter of Justin Barger.  Not able to turn, Barger made hard contact with the outside wall destroying his mount.  Except for a sore wrist, Barger was fine…The stars and cars of the Jacobs Motorsports tour will make one more visit to Granby on August 31 followed up by a visit to Autodrome Drummond the next night…ESS will now take two weeks off before it’s a big three race Lucas Oil Series weekend at Edelweiss, Brockville and Cornwall to make up the July 15th rain out.

** Note – The event at Autodrome Drummond on July 28th fell to rain.

$2,000 Awaits the Winner of the 4th Annual Earl Halaquist Memorial.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – It’s been since October 15, 1994 that the stars and cars of the Empire Super Sprints (ESS) and the tour brought to you by Jacobs Motorsports has appeared at the famed Fonda Speedway which is know as the “Track of Champions”.  This Saturday night a little history will be made as it marks the 4th annual Earl Halaquist Memorial with $2,000 going to the winner of the 25 lap A-Main event.  Fonda is rich in tradition and it’s only fitting that the event will honor the 2000 National Sprint Car Hall of Fame inductee.  The Halaquist family lives in nearby Bainbridge, N.Y. and will have many family members on hand to celebrate the evening.  The six-time United Racing Club champion (a record that still stands), Halaquist amassed a total of 53 feature wins with the historic club which still ranks him fifth on the all-time win list.  The 2007 racing season for ESS has been filled with exciting events in both the United States and Canada and Fonda fans can expect a big field of the winged machines in the pits.  Heading the list will be current point leader Steve Poirier, second in points and a last name rich in Fonda lore, Jeff VanDusen, two-time champion Lance Yonge, defending champion Alain Bergeron, Jeff Cook, Michael Parent, Justin Barger and Mike Stelter.  These stars will be joined by local favorites Cory Sparks, Jessica Zemken, John Karklin Jr., Warren Alexson and Jami Russell.  The Car Mate Custom Built Trailer heat events will kick off the night’s action followed by he Gabriel’s IGA Markets/Walt’s Hobby Dash and the KSE Racing Products B-Main.  All that will lead up to the $2,000 to win, 25 lap A-Main where the first Fonda ESS winner will be etched in over 12 years.  It will be an exciting night as the Fonda big block modifieds will also be a part of the action.  ESS and the “Track of Champions”, it has been a 12 year wait but a wait that will be excitement guaranteed!!

Quotes from Paul McMahan, driver of the No. 20 TSR/Bass Pro Shops/Eagle:

With two stand-alone events at Lernerville Speedway and Lebanon Valley Speedway before and after the three-day run at Williams Grove, are you looking forward to that change of pace?

“While it’s good to have a few days at a particular track to really settle into the groove, I also enjoy the one-day shows. We get to go into a track, put on a great show and leave the fans wanting to come back for more next year. Heading into Lernerville, I am really looking forward to competing in the Don Martin event. It’s a great event, as he has such a legacy in the sport. Lernerville is also one of the nicest facilities we compete at all year in terms of how the staff receives us. They really work to make us feel at home and it’s nice to go into a race track with that type of atmosphere. Lebanon Valley is in a beautiful part of the country. With all the traveling we do across the mid-section of the country, it’s nice to change up the scenery. Upstate New York is also just such a historic place. It’s a lot of fun to experience some of those sights with your family.”

Would you consider the Summer Nationals at Williams Grove one of the toughest events of the season?

“Any time you race in Pennsylvania, you know you have to have your game face on. There are so many good teams and drivers in that part of the country and it’s the heart of winged sprint car territory. You’ve got a group of guys that battled week in and week out at those key Pennsylvania tracks that are just so tough. They’re used to having to fight their way into the A-main every week and working their way from the back to the front isn’t a problem. You just really have to focus on qualifying well and getting out of your heat race each night. You don’t want a handicap trying to get into the A-main.”

With a Bass Pro Shops store in Harrisburg, Pa., will the No. 20 TSR/Bass Pro Shops/Eagle team be making any detours to do a little shopping between races?

“We’re going to do an appearance at the Harrisburg store on Wednesday night. The staff at the store has been great to work with. They always make us feel very welcome and we have a great time. We’ll have the No. 20 car and transporter on display and I’ll be signing autographs from 6-8 p.m. I think they’re also going to have a few other winged sprint car teams bring their display cars out. For directions to the store, race fans can log on to www.basspro.com. Hopefully, we’ll be able to get them in the winner’s circle at Williams Grove later this week.”
