DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 29, 2008) – Talladega Superspeedway is dubbed the “wild card” in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup for a reason. Standings shuffling – and championship hopes shattering – races have been staged at Talladega:
2004: Jeff Gordon came into Talladega as the points leader. He finished 19th in the race, and was bounced from atop the standings by eventual series champion Kurt Busch. Gordon finished the year in third.

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — It was probably one of the most spectacular finishes in NASCAR history.

Carl Edwards made a suicide run into the third turn underneath race leader Jimmie Johnson. He was determined to win.

Unfortunately, Edwards ran out of track before running into the wall, struggled to maintain control and watched Johnson go back by him for the victory at Kansas Speedway.

Montoya disqualified after earning pole at Kansas

By Bram • Sep 26th, 2008 • Category: NASCAR, Newsflash, Sprint Cup Series

Johnson moves into top starting position for Sunday

Jimmie Johnson will start from the pole in Sunday’s Camping World RV 400 at Kansas Speedway after Montoya’s qualifying speed was disallowed.

Montoya turned a lap in 31.368 seconds (172.150 mph) Friday to knock Jimmie Johnson (172.007 mph) out of the top starting spot for Sunday’s race — only to see his time disallowed because the nitrogen gas pressure in the rear shock absorbers of his No. 42 Dodge exceeded the 75 pounds per square inch allowed under NASCAR rules.

As a consequence, Montoya will start 42nd Sunday on an owner points provisional. The pole is the 18th of Johnson’s career, his fifth of the season and his third at the 1.5-mile speedway.

DOVER, Del. (September 20, 2008) — With a committee of crew chiefs — and in the face of some wishful thinking on the part of Mike Bliss — Kyle Busch won Saturday’s Camping World RV Sales 200 Nationwide Series race at Dover International Speedway in dominating fashion.

Busch led 157 of 207 laps in a race that ended with a green-white-checkered-flag finish after Landon Cassill and Steven Wallace collided on Lap 199 to bring out the seventh and final caution and send the event seven laps beyond its scheduled distance.

Random testing to go into effect beginning in 2009

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 20, 2008) – The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) announced today it has amended its longstanding substance abuse policy to include random testing beginning in 2009.

The amended policy mandates that all drivers in NASCAR’s three national series be tested prior to the start of the 2009 season. Team owners must also verify that all licensed crew members have been tested by a certified lab prior to the start of the season. In addition, NASCAR will test its officials prior to the start of the 2009 season. Drivers, over-the-wall crew members and NASCAR officials thereafter will be subject to random tests throughout the year.
